Ants: A Colony of Ideas
A Cross-Curricular Unit based on the NTeQ Model

Rationale for theme and unit

The team members offered suggestions to each other to determine what themes and ideas each member would like to pursue in the final project. The team members created short lists of topics that could be covered. After interests were expressed and agreements were made, the theme was narrowed down to ants. Once the topic was determined, the team members focused on various aspects relating to the topic and divided the technology applications among the members based on the subject or project idea each member suggested. As a result, the four members have created lesson plans covering the spectrum of subject areas: technology, science, social studies, and math. The benefit of using a cross-curriculum unit of this nature is that the lesson plans also focus on language arts objectives. Even though a specific language arts lesson plan is not included in this team's unit, language arts teachers should have no problem selecting any of the lessons and modifying or using the lesson as it is written with language arts standards and objectives in place of the other subjects' standards and objectives. The lesson plans can stand alone, or be used in combination as a complete unit. Teachers will need to verify and may need to adjust the standards and objectives for their state and local school.

One final fun fact that we noticed (although it was not originally selected for this reason) The "A Team" created a lesson on "Ants" - the graphic shows the A for Ants, but it could very well be for "A Team" as well.
