Mark Evans A Field of Ants Social Studies Database

Lesson Summary:

The purpose of this lesson is for students to learn the social structure (Community and Citizenship) of an ant colony, and to compare that social structure to some of the countries we have studied in class. As a result, students will create a 5-minute video advertisement inviting "ants" to their colony. This lesson would be good as a kick-off lesson for discussing the concepts of "community" and "citizenship". The interest or "real-world" reason students would want to learn about the social structure of ants is based on the problem (see below). KWL Chart will help guide students as to what information could be obtained, and to help the teacher guide students towards the intended objectives.

Jennifer Spaulding Welcome to the World of Ants Science Word Processing

Lesson Summary:

This lesson will allow students to gather information via the Internet on ants found in North America. They will look at different species native to their own home continent. The lesson is also designed to incorporate other types of technology integration such as word processing and media presentation. The students will be using Microsoft Word to create summaries of what they learned as well as pages for their class book. They will be using Microsoft Power Point to create a class presentation as the final task for this lesson. This student-centered lesson plan will allow the students to have a meaningful and insightful learning experience.
