Lesson Plans for Exploring Prejudice and Diversity Issues

Dealing with Hate

Objective: to discover non-violent ways to address prejudice, discrimination
and stereotyping
Grade level: All ages
Materials: chalk
Time Required: 30-45 minutes

1. Engage students in a discussion by asking them to name some of the incidents of prejudice, discrimination and stereotyping that they heard or saw at the aMAZE and BEYOND exhibit (e.g. in Sticks and Stones you heard words of hate and stereotyping). Then ask them to share some real-life experiences they have witnessed or been involved in recently.

2. Say: Because we now know more about prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination, we will probably recognize it more often. Ask: What can we do to change the situation when it occurs?

3. Invite students to brainstorm about what they would do the next time they witness an act of discrimination, stereotyping or prejudice, (e.g., If someone called you ______, what might you say? What would you do?) *

Review each option for:

a) your personal safety

b) practicality

c) in what circumstances would this be effective?

d) what you would need to implement their decision on how to act?

Example:

Option walk Away Safety Yes Practicality Yes Circumstances All Implement Sense of Self

*List student responses on the board. Remind them that they are brainstorming, and encourage them to open their minds and list lots of options
