Lesson Plans for Exploring Prejudice and Diversity Issues

Developing a Plan

Objective: to identify steps that can be taken to remedy biased behaviors in the school community
Grade levels: All
Materials: 1 action plan per person, chalk
Time required: 45 minutes

1. Write these questions on the board. Ask students to write responses.

Do I treat some of my classmates differently than others? Do I help my classmates when others are being unkind to them? Does my school help when students are being discriminated against? Am I encouraged to explore other religions, races and cultures in my studies? Am I aware of my own prejudices? Am I working to change them?

2. Distribute the action planning sheet (see next page). Explain that it is a tool to help them develop and implement a plan for change, a tool for creating a more inclusive school environment. This can be done individually, in pairs, or in small groups.

3. When students have completed their individual action plans, ask volunteers or a group representative to share their ideas with the class.

4. As a class, develop an action plan that the class will commit to implementing.

5. See pages What Do I Need To Do and Questions to Consider more.
