Scripts, VB modules and Repairs

 from Steve Yandl

For a number of years, I’ve been a web or newsgroup forum moderator, first with MSN and currently with PC911 ( pcnineoneone.com ).  I found myself looking to automate repairs for the more common problems or find free utilities to provide features desired by many users but not yet available in Windows or Office.  I ended up creating a number of reg and inf files for registry repairs and later wrote a number of scripts for more complex situations.  The collection available for download at this site represents the most frequently asked for files, plus my personal favorites.

The links to the left take you to a brief description of the named utility and a link to download a zipped file.  The zip file contains one or more compressed files.  Typically, there is a ReadMe.txt file with some instructions and most have an installation script that makes setup a snap.

Most of the files were designed for Windows 98 and in some cases Office 2000.  I am only posting those that also work in Windows XP.  These files have also been tested extensively by friends using Windows 2000 and they report good results.

There are only two issues that crop up regularly for people trying to use these scripts.  Most require the Windows Scripting Host.  Many people have disabled WSH to prevent problems from script worms or viruses or their anti-virus program keeps scripts from running.  This will prevent installation of several of the scripts.  The second problem is that Norton anti-virus 2000 and beyond has a setting that prevents running components of Microsoft Office from an external script.  This feature needs to be turned off in Norton if you want to run “IE Spell Checker”

These files are provided free of charge and may be shared.  The scripts should remain intact and I ask for credit as the author if any are distributed.  All these files have been well tested but I can’t assume responsibility for system problems resulting from their use… Steve Yandl
