Many, if not most, graphics handling programs change registry settings when installed so that they become the default application associated with jpg, gif, and other graphics files. In doing this they typically damage settings that allow image preview and/or thumbnail view in Windows Explorer. Even if you manually restore your file associations, image preview and thumbnail view remain unavailable. There are numerous fixes detailed in the Microsoft Knowledge Base; sometimes several are required to restore settings. Fixpix.inf is designed to recreate the defaults in the involved registry keys, effectively applying all the separate repairs without having to try them one by one. To use an inf file, you simply right click and choose the ‘Install’ option from the context menu. The fixpix download below is a zip file containing three different versions of fixpix. The original fixpix is for Win98 and it repairs jpg (all jpeg subtypes), gif, and bmp associations. Fixpix2.inf will do the same plus it handles more file types (including tif). FixPixME.inf is for a Windows ME system.
